Double Strap Hobo Bag w/ Zipper Closure!

Remember those new spring plaids I mentioned? Well here’s one of them all sewn up and ready to go:

Handmade Blue Green Plaid Zipper Hobo bag

Blue Green Plaid Hobo

This bag has two slip pockets and one zipper pocket on the inside. It’s just like my other double strap hobo bags, with one pretty major difference. A zipper closure!

Zipper Hobo Bag

I made a little detachable zipper pull to go with it, and put a pull tab on either end of the zipper. The pull tabs fold over the side of the bag and tuck under the side ties. It’s in the shop now.

I’ve had a few requests from people for bags that have a zipper closure on the main compartment. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but kept putting off because I knew it would be difficult. ¬†Boy, was I ever right! This sucker was one heck of a puzzle, and it took me all day to figure it out. Now that it’s done, I’m super happy with the result and I can’t wait to make more of these. time to order more zippers!

    @ Amy:
Raw edges might not be seen but it definitely will catch on the zipper and will just ruin the bag. Maybe you will have to do some stitching on the edges.

  2. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and visual appearance. I must say you’ve done a great job with this. Also, the blog loads super quick for me on Safari. Exceptional Blog!

  3. @Amy Nope, no raw edges. The zipper tape is encased in two pieces of binding which are sewn to the facing. The tabs cover the raw ends of the zipper and tuck under the side ties. It’s kind of hard to explain, but maybe someday I’ll get around to putting out a pattern.

This is such a pretty bag! I also make purses and recently had a request to do a zipper closure like the one you show. May I ask, was the inside of the zipper area completely free of raw edges??? (Mine was not, but I was okay with it, since it could not be seen.) I made it work but have since instructed my friends and family to shoot me if I ever said I was making another one like that. Seriously. Almost.
